Funerals can truly be augmented by a poem that is apt and fitting for the person you have just lost. The following list of funeral poems about bell ringing are perfect for those who enjoyed the art of bell ringing, or who simply enjoyed the sound of church bells.

The Funeral Bell
by Francis Duggan
The funeral bell is ringing, a reminder of our mortality,
Farewelling a deceased soul, one day ’twill ring for me.
Ringing in the stillness of this cool Autumn day,
Across the rural city, in the morning damp and grey.
The funeral bell is pealing for one, a last farewell,
And few sounds sadder than the slow peals of the loud funeral bell.
Above the streets and houses it echoes to the sky,
For one bound for his/her last resting place – the cemetery nearby.
The peewees in the town park are distinctive in their call,
And the magpie on a wattle pipe on this cool morning in the Fall,
And for one who will not breathe again, the eulogy is read,
And the funeral bell is tolling, in memory of the dead.
The funeral bell is ringing for one, a last goodbye,
And on the clock of our mortality, the hours just seem to fly,
Respect to the departed is all that we can pay,
And for each and every one of us, a final night and day.
Ring Out, Wild Bell
by Alfred Lord Tennyson
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light:
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.
Ring out the grief that saps the mind
For those that here we see no more;
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.
Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.
Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes
But ring the fuller minstrel in.
Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.
Ring out old shapes of foul disease;
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.
Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.
Villanelle Of Bells
by Keith Douglas
Thousands of bells chimed overhead
Their lovely tone shaping my thoughts
Splendid new lands danced in my sight
But with ten thousand bells as my guide
I would never be lost.
Thousands of bells chimed from afar
Distant, soft, and gentle they seemed
Thousands of steps stretched between us
But with ten thousand bells at my side
I would never be lost.
The steps grew larger, the land less great
My eyes more tired, my path less straight
The bells kept ringing, farther away
Too many to count, their sound now grey.
They fall on deaf ears, heart turned aside
Waiting for someone, arms open wide
I have become lost, my own mistake
I went far from them, no path to take.
Forever the bells will be gone
I do not know where to find them
For I thought not of their light
And I heard not what they sang
When the ten thousand bells rang.
Villanelle Of Spring Bells
Bells in the town alight with spring
converse, with a concordance of new airs
make clear the fresh and ancient sound they sing.
People emerge from winter to hear them ring,
children glitter with mischief and the blind man hears
bells in the town alight with spring.
Even he on his eyes feels the caressing
finger of Persephone, and her voice escaped from tears
make clear the fresh and ancient sound they sing.
Bird feels the enchantment of his wing
and in ten fine notes dispels twenty cares.
Bells in the town alight with spring
Warble the praise of time, for he can bring
this season: chimes the merry heaven bears
make clear the fresh and ancient sound they sing.
All evil men intent on evil thing
falter, for in their cold unready ears
bells in the town alight with spring
make clear the fresh and ancient sound they sing.
