Crossword Blindness
Author Unknown
SURLY was the crossword clue,
I gave a sideways stare;
my hubby gave a stifled cough
and looked into the air.
We rubbed our chins and scratched our heads –
just what did it mean?
Try menacing, or angry,
or something in between?
To say it loud was helpful,
and although quite absurd,
we kept repeating time again
that same annoying word.
Now both of us have been to school –
though many years ago –
we both have passed our English grades
but still we do not know!
They say the answer has five letters
but I now have had enough;
I found the answer in the back –
apparently its GRUFF!
My Pencil Is Ready
by Ilene Bauer
My pencil is ready;
The boxes are bare.
I look at the clues
That are luring me there.
I always begin
With the first clue across,
Continuing on
Until I’m at a loss.
I do not despair
If a few I can’t solve
But begin on the down clues
With extra resolve.
The empty spots beckon;
They yearn to be filled
And if I’m successful
I’m quietly thrilled.
Every day
We puzzlers cheer
For since 1913,
Once a day they appear.
My Trusty Pencil
by Ilene Bauer
My trusty pencil helps me out
At crossword puzzle time.
It also comes in handy
When I’m working on a rhyme.
A ball point pen just wouldn’t do –
That really is the case –
For I would be at quite a loss
If I could not erase!
